Across Latin America, political battles and social movements are reshaping the region - but how much of that story are we hearing?
We’re delighted to be joining forces with Crispin Flintoff of The Crispin Flintoff Show to launch a new series looking at the struggles for power, political change and popular movements shaping Latin America today.
We’ll go beyond the headlines to explore stories that are too often ignored or simplified.
The series will bring together expert guests, film, music and audience discussion. You don’t need any prior knowledge of Latin American politics. We want to make these big questions accessible, lively and open to everyone.
Episode 1: Argentina’s Far-Right President Exposed
Poster design by James Ernesto Lang
Argentina’s far-right president Javier Milei came to power in December 2023. A self-described “anarcho-capitalist”, since becoming president, Milei has repeatedly shown that behind his “eccentric provocateur” persona lies a dangerous individual who poses a threat to democracy not just in Argentina but beyond.
Internationally he has been a vocal supporter of Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel’s genocidal actions.
On 3 September Milei visited Chile for a meeting of right-wing Latin American leaders and praised the 11 September 1973 military coup by the US-backed dictator Augusto Pinochet that overthrew the socialist government of Salvador Allende. On the same day he gave a press conference stating that Argentina needed to recover the Falklands (Las Malvinas) from UK control.
Milei is also at the centre of a major scandal involving Fernando Cerimedo, a far-right Argentinian political operative and key Milei ally. Cerimedo was arrested in Bolivia last month on charges of attempting to assassinate his girlfriend, Nadia Beller. Cerimedo is also accused of building the disinformation machine behind far-right presidential wins from Argentina to Bolivia to Honduras, using technology and money from Trump’s own operatives.
Join us to hear experts explain who Milei really is, what his allies are up to, how ordinary Argentinians are resisting his government’s reactionary policies and what lies in store for Argentina’s international relationships and future. There will be plenty of time for audience questions and comments.
